Jamal Lawrence Granick, Ph.D., LMFT has been practicing psychotherapy since obtaining his masters degree in counseling psychology from California State University, East Bay in 1994, subsequently becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (CA LMFT# 38084, NM LMFT# 018121). He has worked with individual adults, couples, adolescents and families in a variety of settings. He is currently in private practice in Santa Fe and sees clients in person there, as well as online (in both New Mexico and California). He also has an extensive background in training students in counseling skills.
Jamal obtained a doctorate in education and research at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, where he was an assistant professor in the masters program from 2009 – 2014. He has a strong interest in the relationship between spirituality and psychology, and is a presenter in the 40 Days: Alchemy of Tranquility Program of the International Association of Sufism (IAS) which offers workshops in psycho-spiritual development. He is also an affiliate of the Community Healing Centers.
He conducted his doctoral research on the presence of the psychotherapist and its impact on the therapeutic relationship. Other research interests include the role of spirituality in therapist training; the relationships between creativity, learning style, and achievement; and consciousness and self.
Most recently, Jamal has been intensively studying somatic approaches to psychotherapy, including Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing, and Laurence Heller’s NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM) and others.
Jamal is a long-time practitioner of martial arts, having achieved the rank of Godan (5th degree black belt) in Aikido from the United States Aikido Federation (USAF). Favorite dojos include:
